Not Sharing and Over Sharing
Recently, Adele stopped a show in Italy to berate a fan in the audience who was recording the performance on a video camera, in defense of her real-time performance and those who were unable to attend the concert and not see Adele in “real time” themselves. More recently (this past weekend), I took approximately four Snapchat videos during a concert I attended in addition to a handful of okay-quality pictures. I could say “I did it because other people were doing it” but really, I did it because I wanted to capture some of my favorite moments and share them with those who weren’t there, or those unfortunate enough to accidentally…

Dear Coffee – A Letter
Dear Coffee, Over the past couple of weeks, I’ll admit, I’ve been neglecting you. Not scooping as much of you into my most beloved appliance which turns your ground little self into a dark, delicious liquid that transforms my mornings from good to glorious has not been easy, but it’s been necessary. Predicting terrible headaches, groggy afternoons, and intense cravings, I have sadly walked out the door without a coffee to go and driven by many a coffee shop with longing in my eyes. However, I could not have been more wrong about my predictions. Yes, the first day or two I fell victim to slight caffeine withdrawal headaches, and did feel…

National Readathon Day 2016
Happy Wednesday, friends! I wanted to take a few minutes to help spread the word about National Readathon Day – which takes place this Saturday, May 21st. If you know about it, share your plans and any extra information below in the comments, and if you are just hearing about it, here is a quick introduction. A partnership between the American Library Association (ALA) and Penguin Random House, National Readathon Day is an opportunity to raise funds for and promote early childhood literacy through the ALA’s Every Child Ready to Read Initiative. The funds raised will specifically aid library programs aimed at literacy development of children five years and younger…

The Mustard Seed Bookstore – Bath, Maine
There’s Something About The Mustard Seed Bookstore Always trying to get as many errands done during the week as possible, as to ensure a more enjoyable and often carefree weekend, I recently found myself leaving the apartment to run errands on a Saturday. This perhaps had a lot to do with taking a vacation day the previous Wednesday, which threw an already busy week into a much more tightly scheduled timeline, leaving me little time and energy to get anything done after work. Anyway, this particular Saturday was cloudy, although warm, and after running said errands I couldn’t bring myself to spend the rest of the day cleaning or picking…

Review: Little Bird of Heaven
Murder, scandal, family, growing up; Joyce Carol Oates’s Little Bird of Heaven begins with semi-appealing oddity but sadly never flourishes into an exciting timeline of events. The first half of the novel is told through the mind of Krista, the daughter of Eddy Diehl, an accused murderer of Zoe Kruller with whom he commits adultery (he’s not the only man in Sparta, New York to do so). The second half is told from the point of view of Aaron, the son of the murdered. Like our narrators, the other characters, a handful or so, were awfully non-dimensional; it was quite difficult to connect with any of them. Dramatic scenes were too dry,…

May Reading Challenge: An Introduction
Happy May Day! Whether you’re celebrating with baskets or treating this as just another day, thank you for taking some time to find out what I’ll be reading this month. The first book is one of short stories by Ron Rash entitled Nothing Gold Can Stay. Ron Rash’s stories have appeared in The New Yorker, the Washington Post, in Slate magazine, and other publications. I chose these short stories because 1. Short stories are my favorite medium to read, and 2. Because they will nicely complement my additional Reading Challenge selections. This year, the literary and writing communities have been celebrating Charlotte Brontë’s 200th birthday. Most know her as the…
