The Book of Life – A Recap
I have completed Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy. I haven’t completed – and enjoyed – a series like this since…I can’t remember. Although I didn’t finish the third installment, The Book of Life, in time to discuss it within the bounds of my Summer Reading Challenge, I need to get my thoughts out about the conclusion to the trilogy, thus the odd (to me) title of this post. Here we go.

Reading Nook Inspiration: Pink Chair in an Alcove
I am suffering from severe writer’s block today. I started writing a Summer Reading Challenge update, and even after a great 4-mile walk can’t find the words for a great post on Disgrace. I’m going to put it aside for a few hours, coming back only when my mind is clear and maybe after I’ve eaten dinner. As a copywriter, writer’s block hits me daily – even if it’s just for fifteen minutes at a time. I will admit, sometimes the writer’s block goes on for a day (downside to working set hours during the week), but luckily my position has many facets and when I’m not writing for the catalog, blog,…

Portsmouth Book & Bar – Portsmouth, New Hampshire
There’s Something About Portsmouth Book & Bar Surrounding the Custom House in the city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire are restaurants, a gourmet grocery store, a handful of banks, and charming greenery contrasting the red brick of historic buildings. It’s like a lovely daydream, really, spending a sunny day in Portsmouth. What turns that daydream into a Utopian reality, however, is what is inside the Custom House. Blending the beauty of a bookstore with the refreshments of a bar is one of the happiest places on Earth: Portsmouth Book & Bar. Step inside this wondrous place and you will see a couple of table-height bookshelves as well as a few full-length…

Flossing, Sleep, and Other Lies
The following is an incomplete list of lies that I have encountered in my short time here on Earth. Some are general, most are personal. Please, feel free to add any you have been made a victim of in the comments below. Flossing This past week, the Associated Press published a harrowing amount of information on how flossing is one big fat lie. The act of flossing has never been researched “as required” and there is no physical or physiological evidence to back up evil dentists’ claims that flossing does any good for your mouth and health (Wait, is it dangerous? Is it like a vaccine?!?). Finally, I can look my dentist straight in…

Shorter, Condensed, Succinct, Abridged
My trip to the library on Friday started with slight disappointment but ended with a flurry of thoughts about what we – as readers, scholars, editors, people of the present – do to and with literature of the past. First, the disappointment.

Outside Brattle Book Shop – Boston, Massachusetts
There’s Something About [Being Outside] Brattle Book Shop On my most recent trip to Boston, I stumbled upon a bookstore that has been on my must-visit bookstore list. Yes, stumbled upon it. I was in the city for a Bachelorette party, and we were on our way to an Escape Room on West St. To my absolute elation, the building in which the Escape Room was situated happened to be a few steps away from the Brattle Book Shop. I may have loudly exclaimed that since we were early for our scheduled activity we should visit the Book Shop, which includes an outdoor sales space full of carts of books.
