NaNoWriMo 2022 | Week 1 Update

It may not have been a full week, but the first stretch of NaNoWriMo is nearly all behind us (Saturday isn’t over yet!).

I’m happy to look back on the past four days, because I had such momentum during each writing session. I could not have asked for a better start to this challenge; thanks to all that momentum, I met (and exceeded) my daily word count goal each day.

My current word count is 7,179 words. I’m thrilled to have exceeded the 5,000 word milestone, and so far I’ve updated my word count on the NaNo site every day (I’m a big fan of the milestone badges they award participants – they are great motivators). I haven’t done any writing yet today, but yesterday I left off on a scene that offers a great stepping stone to the next scene, so I’m excited to get back to it.

Something that surprised me during my first successful year of NaNoWriMo was the amount of dialogue that flowed from my fingertips to my keyboard. I suppose I’m less surprised now, but I have written a lot of dialogue so far. I’ve always felt that setting descriptions and “fluff” details (which I’m a big fan of) are great for days when I don’t feel like writing anything, so I’m reserving all of that for when those days inevitably pop up (usually closer to the midpoint of the challenge). All of this is to say that my characters are quite chatty so far.

That’s all for this update. Best wishes to all fellow participants as we get deeper into the challenge. Feel free to reach out here, on Twitter, or Instagram if you need a pep talk, to rant about your WIP, or just to say hi!
