NaNoWriMo 2019 | Week 3 Update

The third week of National Novel Writing Month went by WAY too fast. And if you are following my Twitter thread, you already know I didn’t get a lot of writing done. But if you would like to read a quick summary of how I spent Week 3 of NaNoWriMo, or hear about my nearly-unrealistic optimism about reaching the goal of 50,000 words by the end of November, you’re in the right place.

Unlike the past two Fridays, I have a lot of motivation to work on my WIP after publishing this post. I think this week is different because I haven’t done a lot of creative work outside of my job in the past few days, and I’m really feeling the need to get some ideas down on paper (or in my case, the digital Scrivener page). The thing I’m most proud of doing over the past week is make notes of ideas that have appeared at random moments throughout the days, instead of putting the ideas off until I was ready for a solid writing session. If you happen to be in a bit of a slump like I am with NaNoWriMo or any other writing project, jotting down some random notes could possibly help you feel productive, and something might come together without you initially realizing it.

Anyway, time for a couple of numbers; where am I in terms of word count? Over the past week, I wrote a total of 4,874 words, and as of 7:00PM, November 22nd, I have written a total of 20,029. As I’ve alluded to, my weekly word count was dreadful, and I am dreadfully behind. BUT I was pretty excited to reach that 20,000 point on November 18th, so I’m not going to undermine it by focusing on not being up to speed.

Going into this past week I wanted to be better about time management, and really making sure I made time for things I wanted to do. Well, I tried a couple of new dinner recipes, I did some baking, and I watched The Mandalorian (#cutenessoverload) as well as spent time with my boyfriend. Apart from being utterly exhausted, I am happy with the way the week went. I did not get a blog post published on Tuesday like I wanted to, and I’ve already addressed my dismal NaNo word count, but I can’t be too aggravated about those things because I’m happy with what I did instead.

So I’m going into this weekend (the last full one of NaNoWriMo) with the same motivation and drive I had last week. 50,000 words? That still feels attainable to me, regardless of my current word count. Why? Because I am a procrastinating, last-minute-pressure needing worker, and instead of finding fault with those habits like many people do, I lean into them. 😎 With that said, I had a work meeting today that was really enlightening and supportive towards my role, but there was one particular point that stuck out to me that I want to practice more outside of work, too: being intentional with time. Am I spending my time wisely? Do I need a break? Do I need to push harder? What should I be giving more time, and what could do with less? Outside of my workplace environment, the subjectivity and flexibility of these questions [I hope] will help me be better towards myself and others, as well as improve and expand creative projects like my writing and blogging. And yes, maybe I will cut down on the amount of procrastinating I do. Maybe.

This update wasn’t a big one, since my progress was nearly zilch, but I hope you enjoyed reading my ramblings if you made it this far. You can stay up to date on my progress throughout the last week of NaNoWriMo here if you’d like, or just pop back in on December 1st when I wrap up all my thoughts and publish my final word count.

Share your third week experiences below, and/or something great that has happened to you in the past week or so – related to your WIP or otherwise. I’d love to hear how your November is going!
