Ten Books On My Fall 2018 TBR
I rarely lay out a seasonal or monthly TBR anymore. I used to format my monthly Reading Challenges like this, but I fell out of that practice for a couple of reasons; the primary one being that I felt it restricted my reading life, especially when I started doing Blog Tours and accepting reviews. Basically, I needed more freedom amidst the scheduled posts. However, this year I’ve decided to do a themed TBR for October. A spooky TBR, if you will. I was going to wait to announce this next week, but this week’s Top Ten Tuesday (created by The Broke and the Bookish and carried on by That Artsy Reader Girl) theme is “Ten Books On My Fall 2018 TBR,” so I figured I might as well announce it now.
This idea for a designated TBR (as opposed to my free-ranging Goodreads TBR) popped into my head after a mini #bookstagram photo session, in which I was trying out some layouts for autumn and Halloween. As I was pulling books off my bookshelves to use, I was reminded of the spooky/Gothic/horror/mystery books and authors I’ve talked about reading for what seems like my entire life – ahem, Wilkie Collins – so I decided right then and there that I would create a designated October reading list. The first six books are my spooky/Gothic/horror/mystery picks, the first eight are the ones I want to complete by the end of October, and I would like to complete the final two books by the end of November. There are a couple of audiobooks on my unofficial fall TBR, but I’m pulling out the semantic card for this post and not including them because I’ll be “listening” to them and not “reading” them. 😉
Now that I’ve blabbered your eyes out, here are the Ten Books on my Fall 2018 TBR:
The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins | The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
The former is considered the first modern English detective novel, and at over 500 pages, my Barnes & Noble Classics edition is the perfect size and floppiness for a cold, moonlit fall night. The latter is also a mystery, and is one of the first English sensationalist novels. I have the Oxford World’s Classics edition which is wonderfully austere.
Dark Tales by Shirley Jackson | We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
The woman, the myth, the legend. I have the Penguin Classics edition of the former, and an elusive Penguin Orange edition of the latter. “The Lottery” is the only piece of Shirley Jackson’s work that I’ve read, so while these are the shortest books on this list, I know they pack some extreme power.
The Italian by Ann Radcliffe
This will be a reread for me, and although my edition includes Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen, I will only be reading Ann Radcliffe’s tale. If you are interested in this edition (I don’t believe it’s still in print), I talked about it briefly in this post.
A Break With Charity by Ann Rinaldi
This book has been in my possession for as long as I can remember. There was a time in my childhood when I was obsessed with learning about the Salem Witch Trials, so I felt I had to have this book. Unfortunately I was much more engrossed in non-fiction accounts (oh how times have changed) of the Trials back then so I never got past the few first pages.
The Gilded King by Josie Jaffrey
Currently my obsession is fantasy and the paranormal, so I am excited to dive into this book about the world’s end, nobility, and humanity.
Blood Moon by S. Yurvati
This book has elements of the paranormal, too, and the unfamiliar (to me) premise coupled with the mysterious circumstances described in the summary has me quite intrigued.
The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson
This is the sequel to Mistborn, which I recently finished and…okay I was going to launch into my feelings about Mistborn but I need to save those for my monthly wrap-up. I am excited for The Well of Ascension so here it is on my Fall 2018 TBR.
Vengeful by V.E. Schwab
If you know about this book, then you know why it’s on my list. If you don’t know about this book, don’t mind if I do tell you why it’s on my list. Vengeful is the much (much) anticipated follow up to Vicious (published five years ago), and it comes out on September 25th. Both are in the Villains series, which means the main characters are all villains. Delicious, right? I’ve avoided reviews from those lucky enough to receive and read advanced copies, because I want to read it without others’ influence.
If you also have any of these books on your immediate TBR, or if you’ve read any of them already, let me know! It would be fun to chat about them. You can stay up to date on my October TBR progress in my Instagram stories and on Twitter, and share the book or books you want to read in the next month or so in the comments. Happy [spooky/fall/normal] reading!

We Have Always Lived in the Castle was a DNF the first time I trier but I want to try again! Great list!
Kelsey
Thank you! What made it a DNF for you?
Daniela Ark
I think it was moving too slow 😔
Kelsey
Oh, bummer. I wonder if the pacing will be similar in the story collection – I’m definitely interested in seeing how it and the novel compare/contrast.

I preferred The Woman in White to The Moonstone, but the pick of the bunch (of the ones I’ve read) is We Have Always Lived in the Castle – fab book! Someday I must read The Italian… Enjoy your reading! 😀

I also started it recently after it had been waiting in my Kindle for long….but now that I am into it, it is getting interesting by the pages…

Some interesting books listed here! I like that you’re only counting ones you read and not the ones you listen to.
Kelsey
Thank you Debbie!

Hi! Thanks so much for visiting my blog. 🙂
I’m afraid I haven’t read any of these, but own at least half of them. I’m also a big fan of fantasy and paranormal, so I’m looking forward to your reviews this month!
