Guilty Reader Book Tag

This book tag, which I found over at 150 Characters and More, tries to expose book lovers’ guilt and regret. It mostly worked on me, but it’s all in great fun, right? Right? Read Karmilia’s post here, and let me know if you choose to lay out your guilt and regret with this book tag!

Have You Ever Re-gifted A Book That You’ve Been Given?

No. Typically when I receive a book as a gift it’s because I’ve asked for it, so I wouldn’t re-gift it.

Have you ever said you’ve read a book when you haven’t?

I’ve said I’ve read parts of a book when I haven’t, like in college if I didn’t have time to read up to a certain point for class.

Have you ever borrowed a book and not returned it?

Yes. :X But not on purpose – I still have it and still intend to return it, however covertly I can.

Have you ever read a series out of order?

The first Harry Potter book I read was The Goblet of Fire because it had just been published (I was 8), and I didn’t yet know about the first three books. So I got about halfway through before stopping and starting at the beginning of the series. Other than that, I’ve read The Chronicles of Narnia in a different order a few times, but that doesn’t really count because they can be read in a variety of orders.

Have you ever spoiled a book for someone?

Sometimes I’ll get so caught up in describing a book that I’ll leak some important details, but I am able to stop myself most of the time. So, yes, probably once or twice.

Have you ever doggy eared a book?

A novel, yes, when I was young and dumb. But no more!
And I dog eared almost all of my textbooks in college.

Have you ever told someone you don’t own a book when you do?

Maybe if I thought I did own it? But otherwise, no.

Have you ever skipped a chapter or a section of a book?

Sure. Many chapters of Moby-Dick, part of the long dialogue at the end of Atlas Shrugged, almost all of the historical texts on architecture I was assigned in college…

Have you ever bad mouthed a book you actually liked?

No. “Bad mouthing” a book just seems infantile to me, and this question seems to come from the horrible book shaming trend, in which I’ve never felt inclined to participate. I’ve certainly expressed displeasure about aspects of books I liked overall, but never straight up bad mouthed a book that brought me pleasure.

If you do this Book Tag and feel some or a lot of guilt like I do, let me know so I can read your answers and share the guilt! If you don’t have any guilt, well, I’ll still read your post [however reluctantly ;)].

I will usually tell someone if there is an aspect or issue with a book that I am recommending if knowing about it would have potentially stopped me from picking up the book. Otherwise I try to let them gather their own opinions, maybe they will see something I didn’t!

My only book guilt is when I stop reading a book because I didn’t enjoy it. I’m not sure why, but I feel like I’ve let someone down if I don’t finish a book I’ve started.

Yeah, that can be a difficult decision. It’s even more difficult [for me] when it’s an author I’ve enjoyed before!

I think we’ve all been guilty of at least 1 of these. If a book has a chapter of material that I’m already familiar with, I’ll skip that chapter. It saves time reading something you already know. But give me a great book and I’ll read it front to back.

I enjoy reading something I already know in a different context, but I read mostly fiction so I don’t skip chapters based on that (although I will skip based on boredom, as I said above). 🙂

Fascinating tag with some interesting questions. Mind you I’d answer no to most of them apart from a uni seminar where I was asked if I’d read a text of some importance and decided saying no, I was in the pub, might have been frowned upon. Chapter skipping I don’t do either. If I feel the need to do that then the books lost me already. I like reading so finding a book asking me to skip things is time to drop it and move into the next. In truth that hasn’t happened in years. Might be I’m more discerning in which ones I now choose to read.

Lately if I find myself not enjoying a book, I’ll skip ahead a couple of chapters to see if the story gets more interesting, and then I decide to either continue reading or drop it. I hope this is a short phase before I reach the level of discernment you describe. 🙂
