Down the TBR Hole #8

Down the TBR Hole is a blogging meme created by Lost in a Story. You can see my previous posts here, and continue reading for my latest attempt at decreasing the number of books on my too-long TBR list.

This is how it works:

  • Go to your Goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order by [ascending] date added.
  • Take the first 5 books (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous)
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

In November I kept five books and removed five; let’s see how I fare this month…

Walden by Henry David Thoreau

As much as I know about this book by now, including criticism, I’m still drawn to it.

Verdict: Keep

Salt: A World History by mark Kurlansky

This is one of the books at the bottom of my TBR that has me staring in awe at whatever self it was who added it. Sorry former self, I’m no longer interested.

Verdict: Discard

Who Moved My Cheese? by Dr. Spencer Johnson

I admit that the reviews of this on Goodreads cemented my decision to remove this from my TBR. The allegory referenced in the synopsis is a turn off, too.

Verdict: Discard

The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference by Malcolm Gladwell

Again, I’m not interested in the subject matter described in the synopsis.

Verdict: Discard

How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie

I know why 2015 Kelsey sought out these types of books – but I’m just not interested in reading them anymore.

Verdict: Discard

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey

A book on the list of Classics I still want to read.

Verdict: Keep

A Walk To Remember by Nicholas Sparks

I’ve only read three or four Nicholas Sparks novels, and currently I’m just not interested in reading any more.

Verdict: Discard

Distant Shores by Kristin Hannah

Kristin Hannah’s novels, however, still entice me completely.

Verdict: Keep

The Things We Do For Love by Kristin Hannah

Read above.

Verdict: Keep

The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking

My curiosity about this book has not waned since I added it to my TBR, so…

Verdict: Keep

Another 50/50 split – have you read any of the above books? Or are any of them on your own TBR?

Sound off about my decisions in a comment below.

Well done. I used Who Moved My Cheese and How to Win Friends when I facilitated job search and life skill workshops. Now that I am retired, I am no longer interested in them. A different time and place in my life. You saved some excellent books. I just started reading The War of Art which is great and more relevant for this time in my life! (not that you are looking to add to your list)

Interesting selections and choices! I never had a desire to read Kurlansky’s “Salt”, but I have recently purchased his “The Big Oyster: History on the Half Shell” and am looking forward to reading it. It can go either way, so maybe you are right about discarding “Salt” – the only other book I read by him was “Havana: A Subtropical Delirium” and it was boring and disappointing. As for Carnegie book, one can read the sum in under one minute because there are his bullet points on the internet from the book – that is all one needs to know to influence people 🙂
