Throwback Thursday: Instagram 2015
There’s Something About Instagram
It’s time for a little bit of an Instagram throwback. I’m not sure this series (which will last throughout April in celebration of my blogiversary) will be interesting to anyone but myself, but maybe in the coming weeks I’ll indirectly talk about some lessons or techniques I’ve learned that could be useful to you. Or maybe not.
Anyway, here’s a look at the start of @theressomethingabout_ 📚
October – December 2015
I know that my “first post” isn’t actually the first photo related to my blog that I posted. In 2015 I was still sort of figuring out the content of my blog, which means I posted non-book related photos. This was fine for that point of my blog, however, when I decided to turn my Instagram account into a strict #bookstagram account, I decided to delete the few photos that were no longer relevant to the direction of my blog. I do really like that the following photo is first – it has a serene aesthetic, and it represents my book collection before I moved my books from my parents’ house to my apartment. I really loved this little space (see my current bookshelf situation). This photo also reminds me that I want to post more black and white photos…

The fourteen photos that follow (not counting my Year in Review photo) show that I really preferred snapping a photo and immediately posting it to Instagram – either with no editing or a lot of editing. These photos were taken in the late fall/early winter which means I was taking them without natural light (as I worked during the day/during the few hours of sunlight) – which is to say those non-edited photos could have used some retouching. Plus, perspectives are wonky, and I hadn’t yet embraced that even some “candid” photos need a bit of staging. This might have been the only one I was able to take during the day (it was a weekend day):

The majority of the photos have a coffee mug or some sort of beverage in them – which is probably the thing about my Instagram photos that has remained consistent. I’m usually drinking something – coffee, wine, hot chocolate, tea, gin – while I’m reading (yes, I do drink water; that’s just not always an exciting prop) so it makes it easy to snap a good photo in the moment.

I really wish I had positioned that book and the mug differently, but this is still my favorite kind of photo to take because it’s simple and I can do it from the comfort of the couch/a chair/my bed.
The photos that are edited show that I was into the unique filters of Snapseed (the editing app I use on my phone). I could have at least written some thoughts or a story down on the pages of the notebook below to make the photo a bit more interesting to look at, or you know, some lines from the blog post this photo references, but I digress (you can read the post I reference in the caption here).

My 2015 Year in Review photo is an example of the “other” things I posted, before theressomethingaboutkm became primarily about books. The left middle photo is actually the only one that’s still on my Instagram (the right middle is the first photo I placed in this post, although of course with its original color).

Next week I’ll be reviewing my 2016 Instagram photos, which are definitely an improvement on 2015’s small selection. My old logo makes an appearance since I premiered my domain in April of 2016, I experimented more with editing, and I took a lot of close-up shots. That post will be a bit longer than this one, because I used Instagram for the entirety of 2016, so if you’re interested check back in next Thursday.
