From My Bookshelf: Clara, Breakfast, Lovely

Happy Friday friends! I’m headed into another three-day weekend (the blizzard this past Monday shut down just about the entire state), so I’m feeling energized regardless of how crazy this work week was. I have a few projects to work on and some planning to do, so right now is the perfect time to sit in front of my bookshelves and choose three books to talk to you about.

Clara and Mr. Tiffany Susan Vreeland

A fictional account of how Clara Driscoll cut her Tiffany lamp legacy, Susan Vreeland does a wonderful job with hitting all the points of my “favorite book criteria.” Drama, love, disappointment, reality, strong women, and especially for me, Tiffany’s! Definitely put this near the top of your To Be Read list(s).

Breakfast at Tiffany’s Truman Capote

I fell in love with the movie first, then the original story. Which, if you also fell in love with the movie first, is shocking. They become very different stories, although I enjoy both endings. The Hollywood ending is pure Hollywood (recently I rewatched “Paris When it Sizzles” – which certainly parodies Breakfast at Tiffany’s in a charming way) and caters to everything I hoped it to be, while Truman Capote’s original perhaps is somewhat more realistic, more honest. And here’s a confession: I’ve never read the other three stories that are in this collection; now that I’ve reminded myself of this I will read them over the weekend!

How to be Lovely Melissa Hellstern

This book was a gift, and I’ve read it in snippets. It’s not a how-to manual, it’s a book of memories, achievements, quotes, and other moments from Audrey Hepburn’s life that are well-known, and some that are not-as-well-known. I’ve admired Audrey Hepburn since the day I learned about her; her grace, dedication, and self-awareness were of the highest caliber. Even if you haven’t seen any of her movies or read about her humanitarian work, this book is quite inspiring and just a nice addition to any bookshelf.
